January 2005 - Red Wing, Minnesota
Lakes Design Group was asked by an International Drive Belt Manufacturer to examine the manual process of cutting off rolls of soft rubberized linter sheet, rotating the grain 90 degrees, and then re-splicing onto a new roll with the grain reoriented.
"It was an ergonomic nightmare", said Dale Baumann of Lakes Design Group. "The shearing and rotating of the sheet was done by hand. Splicing alignment was done manually, and the splice scrap was uncontrolled."
After reviewing the product application and the historical method of re-splicing the material, Lakes Design submitted a design proposal for an automated system. The automated design provided several benefits for the manufacturer:
Production increased from 8 rolls per day to 20 rolls per day per workcell.
Scrap was reduced from $1200 per 100 rolls to $200 per 100 rolls.
Annual Scrap and Labor Savings approached US$100,000 and an increase in production capacity of 250 percent within the same floor space, and with 1 less operator.
Designed and installed system provided a savings of US$350,000 (per workcell) over a commercially available system, with an improved lead time to install of 8 months.
The system was designed to be compliant to North American Electrical standards, where the commercially available systems from Europe would have required modifications and onsite electrical testing to conform to the US National Electrical Code.
